How to Build a Garden Gate That Won't Sag: Hardware & Fixings Checklist

Gates sag for three reasons: hinges too small for the weight, a diagonal brace fitted the wrong way round, or fixings working loose in the post. Size band and hook hinges to the gate, run the brace up from the bottom hinge side, and fix with coach screws into sound timber. Do those three things and the gate swings true for decades.


Here's the full hardware checklist, the hanging sequence that keeps everything square, and the fixes if you've inherited a gate that already drags.


Your gate hardware checklist


Sort all of this before you pick up a drill. Half of all wonky gates come down to improvising hardware mid-job.


  • Hinges - a pair of tee hinges for light gates, or band and hook hinges for anything heavy or ledged and braced

  • Coach screws - for hinge plates and hooks into the post; wood screws alone won't hold a swinging load for long

  • A latch - auto-catch or thumb latch for everyday use

  • A padbolt - a galvanised Brenton padbolt takes a padlock and locks the gate independently of the latch

  • A cabin hook - holds the gate open and stops wind slamming it, which loosens every fixing over time

  • Ground clearance packers - off-cuts or blocks to set the gap while you fix

  • If you'd rather not spec each part, a matched gate kit bundles hinges, latch and fixings in one bag


Step 1: size the hinges to the gate, not the budget


Hinges are where most sagging starts. A useful rule for tee and band hinges: the strap should reach at least halfway across the gate's width, and closer to two thirds on a heavy ledged and braced gate. The longer the strap, the more of the gate's frame shares the load instead of it all hanging off two screws near the stile.

For a light picket gate, 300mm to 450mm tee hinges do the job. A framed or ledged and braced gate wants adjustable band and hook hinges, which run from 350mm up to 900mm and let you fine-tune the hang after fitting. Choose hot-dip galvanised over cheap zinc-plated every time. The Galvanizers Association explains why the thick galvanised layer protects the steel sacrificially, so a scratch doesn't become a rust line by next winter.


Step 2: get the brace pointing the right way

This is the detail that separates gates that last from gates that don't. A timber diagonal brace works in compression, so it must run upwards from the bottom of the hinge side to the top of the latch side. Fitted that way, the weight of the latch corner pushes down the brace and into the bottom hinge, which is exactly where the post can take it.


Fit the brace the other way round and it does almost nothing - the gate hangs off its fasteners and the sag begins the day you hang it. If you're building the gate yourself, cut the brace to a snug fit between the ledges before screwing it; a loose brace is a decorative one.


Step 3: check the post before you blame the gate

A gate is only as good as what it hangs from. The hinge post needs to be plumb, solid in the ground and thick enough to take coach screws without splitting - 100mm square is a sensible minimum for a pedestrian gate. If the post moves when you push it, fix that first. Pilot-drill every coach screw to about the diameter of its core, and wind them in with a socket rather than driving them like screws.


Step 4: hang it square


  1. Prop the gate in the opening on packers, with equal ground clearance along its swing (allow more over grass or gravel than paving).

  2. Wedge the latch-side gap so the gate sits centred, then mark the hinge positions on the post.

  3. Fix the top hinge first with one fixing, check the gate swings level, then add the rest.

  4. Fit the bottom hinge, re-check with a level on the top rail, and only then drive every fixing home.

  5. Swing the gate through its full arc a dozen times before fitting the latch, so you set the latch to how the gate actually hangs.

  6. Fit latch, padbolt and cabin hook last, with the gate in its settled position.



Step 5: latches, bolts and holding it open


An auto latch clicks shut behind you and covers everyday use. For security, add a Brenton padbolt low on the frame where it can't be reached over the gate, and pair it with a decent padlock. A cabin hook on the fence or wall holds the gate open on windy days - it looks like an afterthought, but wind-slam is the biggest single cause of loosened hinge fixings we see. On double or field gates, a throw-over loop drops over both stiles and takes the strain off the latch entirely.


Already sagging? Fix it without rebuilding


Work through these in order and most gates come back.

  • Tighten every hinge fixing; replace any spinning screws with coach screws one size up

  • Check the brace direction - if it runs the wrong way, add a second brace the correct way or refit it

  • Re-hang on longer band and hook hinges if the originals are undersized; adjustable hooks let you lift the latch corner back level

  • On wide gates, a gate wheel under the latch stile carries the weight across paving and takes sag out of the equation


FAQs

What size hinges do I need for a heavy wooden gate?

Band and hook hinges whose strap reaches at least half the gate's width, so a 900mm ledged and braced gate wants 450mm bands as a minimum. If in doubt, size up - overspecified hinges cost a few pounds more, undersized ones cost you the gate.


Which way should a gate brace go?

From the bottom of the hinge side up to the top of the latch side. Timber braces work in compression, so the diagonal must push down into the bottom hinge.


Why won't my gate latch line up any more?

The gate has dropped at the latch corner. Tighten or upgrade the hinge fixings first, then use the adjustment on band and hook hinges to lift the corner. Only move the latch keeper as a last resort - it treats the symptom, not the cause.


Are black hinges as durable as galvanised?

Depends what's under the paint. Black-coated hinges on a galvanised base are fine; black paint straight onto bare steel will rust at every chip. Outdoors, hot-dip galvanised (painted or not) is the safer default.
