Decking Screws vs Standard Woodscrews: Which to Use and Why It Matters

Use decking screws for deck boards, every time. They're coated to survive the copper-rich preservatives in treated timber, and their reduced heads pull down flush without splitting the board. Standard woodscrews are for dry, indoor work. Used outside, most will corrode, stain the timber and work loose within a couple of seasons.


That's the short version. The longer version explains why the difference is mostly about chemistry rather than shape, and why the frame of your deck needs a different fixing again. Get all three right and the screws will outlast the boards.

What makes a decking screw different


Put a decking screw next to a standard woodscrew and the differences look small. In service, they're anything but.


  • The coating. A proper decking screw carries an exterior-rated organic or ceramic coating designed for prolonged contact with pressure-treated timber. A bright zinc woodscrew has an electroplated layer just a few microns thick, and it was never meant to live outdoors.

  • The head. Decking screws use a reduced countersunk or trumpet head, usually with cutting ribs underneath, so the head buries itself flush without crushing the surface fibres. A standard countersunk head either sits proud or splits the board edge on its way in.

  • The point and thread. A slash point and coarse lower thread let the screw start fast and drive without pilot holes in most softwood. Many designs add a plain shank section that pulls the board down tight to the joist rather than jacking it up.

  • The colour. Green and brown finishes aren't decoration. They're matched to treated and hardwood boards so the fixing line disappears.


Our view: on a deck you'll walk on for the next 20 years, the difference in cost between a box of proper decking & timber screws and a box of general-purpose woodscrews is one of the cheapest insurance policies in the whole build.


Why standard woodscrews fail outdoors

Modern pressure treatments are copper based. That's what makes the timber resistant to rot, but copper is also higher up the galvanic series than zinc, so when a zinc-plated screw sits in damp treated timber, the zinc sacrifices itself and the steel underneath starts to rust. The first sign is black staining bleeding around each screw head. The second is heads shearing off when you try to lift a board.


The treatment level matters too. Under BS 8417, deck boards need Use Class 3 treatment (outdoors, above ground) while joists, beams and posts should be treated to Use Class 4, the ground-contact standard. The TDCA's timber preservation guidance is worth a read before you order timber, because a UC4 frame holds more preservative, and that means more copper working on your fixings. The wetter and more heavily treated the timber, the less forgiving it is of the wrong screw.


Getting the size right


A reliable rule: the screw should be at least two and a half times the thickness of the board you're fixing. For standard 28mm deck boards that means a 65mm screw as the sensible minimum, and 70mm to 80mm for 32mm or 38mm boards. Gauge-wise, 4.5mm or 5.0mm covers almost every domestic deck.

  • Two screws per board at every joist, never one down the middle

  • Keep fixings roughly 15mm in from board edges and ends

  • Pilot-drill the last 50mm at board ends, where splits start

  • Leave the drill clutch doing the work - overdriven heads pocket water


Fixing the frame: a different job entirely


Decking screws are board fixings. The frame underneath is carrying the load of the deck, the furniture and everyone standing on it, and it wants structural fixings sized for the joint. For joist-to-beam and ledger connections, use dedicated timber construction screws in 6.0mm gauge or above. For posts and heavy sections, hex head coach screws give you a bigger clamping face and a fixing you can genuinely torque down.


One screw type for boards, another for structure. Decks that get built with a single multi-purpose screw throughout tend to be the ones creaking within a year.


When stainless steel earns its keep

For most inland decks, a quality coated carbon-steel decking screw is the right call. Spend the extra on stainless in two situations. Within a few miles of the coast, salt spray will eventually find the weak spot in any coating, and A4 (marine grade) stainless removes the worry. And in oak, cedar and other tannin-rich timbers, ordinary steel reacts with the tannins and leaves permanent blue-black stains around every head. A2 stainless is fine for tannin staining inland; go A4 near salt.


FAQs

Can I use decking screws to build the deck frame?

They'll drive in, but they're not designed as structural fixings. Frame joints should get construction screws, coach screws or bolts sized to the load, with joist hangers where joists meet beams or ledgers.


Do I need to pre-drill for decking screws?

Not usually in softwood - the slash point handles it. Pilot-drill at board ends where splitting is likely, and always pilot-drill hardwoods and composites unless the screw manufacturer says otherwise.


How many screws does a deck board need?

Two at every joist. A single centred screw lets the board cup and lift at the edges, and it's the most common shortcut we see on failed decks.


Are gold or yellow zinc woodscrews OK in treated timber?

Treat yellow zinc the same as bright zinc: an interior finish. If the packaging doesn't state that the screw is rated for use in pressure-treated timber, assume it isn't.
